New Find: Duolingo

So if you know me at all, my phone is glued to my hand. I watched a video, on one of the lad bible type sites, the other day showing someone putting an iphone down the grate and it made me feel physically sick. The thought of being without my phone gives me cold shivers. Anyway there is a point to all of this – I’ve found a new app.

I was watching Hobbie’s video tonight – a guy doing a March faves, yes by the way! Anyway in his faves he mentioned the app Duolingo. I downloaded it to see what it was and i really like it – so much so i’m writing about it on here. I always wanted to teach myself a language – i did German at school but it wasn’t for me, i did however want to learn Spanish. I used to holiday in Spain every year growing up and i always thought i’d like to learn the language.

Duolingo is a language learning app and after experimenting with it for a bit tonight, it’s really easy to use and it seems like an idiot proof way to learn a language. Spanish is the one i tested (obv) but there’s a wide range of languages on there to choose from.

You start by selecting your language and then you can set a target of how long you’d like to spend each day learning. It gives you realistic time limits and it gives you the choice of sending reminders. I opted for 5 mins a day and then i thought i’d give it a go to see how it works.ย The first level for me was how to say man, woman, girl and boy and how to refer to he/she/i in a sentence. It showed you the spelling for the word, you could listen to the pronunciation, you could click for easy to read explanations and it had images to accompany the words to help with your understanding. It also tests you at the end of each stage to check how you did with that level. I believe there is an accompanying app where you can even take proper language tests and earn a certificate.

From what i can see this is a free language learning app – you simply unlock the next stages by completing each level in the order it gives you. I’m excited by this. I am more likely to commit to something if it’s online or in app form because i just spend my life online. I think this is such a cool easy to use app and great for busy people who want to learn on the go without putting in too much effort. I’m excited to keep using this and see where it goes.

I thought i’d share this with you guys because i’d never heard of it until tonight. If you have any other cool apps you think i might like feel free to share in the comments below ๐Ÿ™‚
