Let’s chat about New Years

Did you know that as much as i love Christmas, my favourite night of the year is actually New Years. A lot of people find that hard to believe especially when i hype Christmas up so much but it’s true. My favourite Christmas songs (well 2/3) are actually songs about the New Year. I thought i’d done blogging for the year after 25 posts in a row as part of the blogmas series but since i’ve dedicated so much of my blog this year to another of my favourite holiday’s it only seemed fair i spend some time having a little chat with you about New Years. I think i also want to reflect on 2016 because i’ve seen so many people say it’s been a shit year for them but for me personally it’s actually been one of the best year’s yet.

So where shall we start? Maybe i should explain why New Year means so much to me. I love the magic of the night, for me it’s the one night of the year where anything seems possible. You normally associate magic with Christmas, the kids belief in Santa, reindeers and elves but when you’re older that magic isn’t there anymore because you know the truth. With New Year’s however that fresh start feeling will always be there. I don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions (you can start to make changes any hour of any day) but for one night i like that people want to be the best version of themselves. They are planning their fresh starts, their new chapters and it’s that newness that i love. People start to believe again, no matter how bad the year has been, on that one night people want to make things better and they believe in the possibilities a new year can bring. I think it’s great that at New Year you spend the time with your favourites. Sure at Christmas you gather your loved ones around and that’s awesome, we love our families and friends, but on New Year’s, the night where you take a leap into the unknown the people who you choose to have besides you are the people who mean the absolute world to you, your seconds (name the film reference!) At New Year’s there’s only one person you want to kiss at midnight, or hug, or if you’re elsewere in the world, make a phone call to. It makes you realise who the people you love the most really are. I believe in the magic of New Years and it’s the one night of the year i care the most about.

So i was going to say that’s enough soppiness but since i want to reflect on 2016, the sentiment will probably carry on (sorry, not sorry). I wrote a piece on social media at the beginning of December saying ‘Knowing what you know now, what would you say to yourself 12 months ago?’ If you could go back 12 months in time with the knowledge you have from 2016 what would you say to yourself. For me i wouldn’t want to spoil any suprises but what i would personally say is ‘girl you’re going to fricking shock yourself. There’s things you are going to do that you didn’t know were possible. In fact there’s things you are going to do that you didn’t even know you wanted. You couldn’t predict the type of insane year you are going to have.’ Ok 2016 has not been perfect, every year has ups and downs but it’s perspective and your character that determine how you see things. I think the way in which you look back on a year says a lot about you.

So 12 months ago today, i was a completely different person. I actually look unrecognisable in last year’s NYE picture to today which is quite funny but my personality and lifestyle have also changed too. It’s strange thinking that last year i was content and not even looking down the road i’ve taken. With that in mind i’m very intrigued to see what 2017 has in store for me. Life’s bloody funny. You’ll probably have seen that famous meme that does the rounds every year ‘If someone came up to you and handed you a book and upon reading it you realized it was about your life would you read it to the very end?’ I always struggled with this question, i’m very impatient and i like to be in control so seemingly my answer should have been yes. However i like making mistakes and learning from them and i think if you knew your life’s path it would take away any sense of fun, hope and motivation so as much as i can’t wait to see what 2017 has in store, i’ll play the game fairly.

Now i just looked back on my old Instagram to get that book quote and i found this quote i’d also shared too ‘Tomorrow is the first blank page of a 365 page book. Write a good one.’ I’ll leave you with that thought. Happy New Year.
